Leaving The Grey Between

We are these incredible creatures
Of both darkness and light
We keep buried so very deeply
So we might never know how full
Is the pain of our despair
Or the beauty of our spirit
Or the strength we might show
If we could but release ourselves
From the grey we have created
To keep the best of ourselves
And the worst of ourselves
Beneath the skin
Beneath our consciousness
Beyond our capacity
To love

Branches of darkness
Reach out for me
But I resist
If only just

Still…
That is enough
To stave the pain

In this hollow I’ve carved out
From tendrils of deepest sorrow

I find resolve to carry on

On the Cacophony of Being

This spirit of life

This beauty
This pain
This anguish
This love

This cacophony of being
That is I
That is experience
That is action

Tension of light and dark
Tension of right and wrong
Never grey
Never muted

That mud of fear
That mud of anger
Gripping at my heart
Gripping at my mind

But I will not
Go under
But I will not
Lie down

Or die
In the silence
Of living
Without venture

Visualizing

I swim down
Deep into the reservoir
Of the pain and suffering
That is my despair
Find the glimmer of hope
Release it from the bottom
Cradling it in my arms
As I rise back to the surface
Breathe deeply in the fragrant air
Pull myself up onto the solid shore
Basking in the sun’s warmth
While pain and suffering drains away
Despair releases from my being
While hope swells in my heart

An hour or so
Every day

On the bench
By the shore
On the edge of the fog

I wonder why
But I think I know

That bridge has been enough trouble
For us

No
For me
Maybe just for me

A little old boat

I rest
Moored securely in the calm waters
Harried by the rain, a little bit
But that’s OK
It’s only rain
And I can while away the hours
The days
Until the next time I sail

A little old
A little weary
I can rest here
Be in this peaceful moment
What’s a little rain
A little discomfort
After a life of so many storms
