Twice a day an Island
Momentary wilderness
Beyond an urban beach
But today
Though the wind be high
In the lee of the rocks
A delightful calm
I love them both
The battering grey
The aqua and azure
Though…
And yet
I miss the sea
An urban inlet
Is not a wide sandy beach
On a limitless sea
With breakers vaulting salt spray
Into the atmosphere
Clouds whispering
Breathe in the air
My body sings
With the beauty
Of existence
The beach
Sunshine and sand
Wind and waves
Blankets and bikinis
Children and sand castles
Umbrellas and Ray Bans
Chesterman
Not quite
Such a beach
The clouds
A battery of waves
Roll across the sky
I lose myself
In the rumbling hiss
Of wind and white water
Taste the salty air
On my lips
Breathing deeply
No safer place
Than a chair by the glass
Rain pelting the panes
Droplets running into lines
Refracting dying light
Journal in hand
The lamp set low
Raise my glass of red
To waves rumbling on the sand
I stand
On the exposed bar of sand
Close my eyes
And listen
For the wind
And the waves
And the shutter click
Counting out the seconds
One by one by one by one
The clouds
Roil and tumble above
In grandiose parade
Across azure sky
With every step
I feel a little smaller
A lone figure
Isolated on an expanding horizon
Until I stop
Breathe deeply
Breathe in all this
Glorious enormity
