More about the road
Already travelled
Than what is to come
I carry the past
As tragedies
And failures
Then project them ahead
Like road signs
Diverting me from a truer path
I remind myself
When checking the rearview
Acknowledge the tragedies and failures
Along the road once travelled
But leave them in the past
Then bring to mind
The triumphs and successes
Project these on every road ahead
As billboards of encouragement
We make time across the Strait
The ferry carries me
From all that I’ve known
To I know not where
Yet
But that matters not
The where is not there
I’ve left there behind
Moved on
Forward?
Who knows
Not I
Just an hour gone
And I miss parts of it
Already
Like a child’s stuffed toy
Or her comfort blanket
The woman no longer needs
Nostalgia alone soothes adult vulnerability
A bit
I hope I’ve left
All such things
To the past
They have earned
Like tears
That have fallen
Already forgotten
But for the trails
Dried on my cheek
I wipe them away
Behind me
The wake of my journey
All froth and churn
As I labour
To leave
To forget
Ahead of me
The wake of the moon
All sparkly possibility
As I awaken
To hope
To purpose
We argue
Whether it is
The destination
Or the journey
That matters
But sometimes
We need only observe
The point of departure
As it recedes
Into the distance
I look back
In order to move forward
Bring the past
Into the present
Record the history
So I can release it
Carry the memory
Leave the emotional toil
Of glories and traumas
In the wake
Cropped and framed
Colour corrected and edited
Burnished and patinaed
To make a picture
That tells the story
I wish to remember
These leaves may seem
Like a reminder of past glory

But the leaves
Are just leaves
All the rest is just stories
I tell myself to make sense
Not of leaves
But of my own existence

Makes a passenger jet
Lifting into the sky

Times
Dystopian imaginings for a world of
Ease
So it was no wonder salvagers
Found
