Narrow Passage, Food Islets, Near Ucluelet, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada

Narrow Passage

Narrow passage
Some small hopeful light beyond
Fades on toward the night

Though wide the sea
Destination obscured
Departure long overdue
From specious sanctuary

Where murk grows ever deeper
Even as hopeful light diminishes
Beyond the narrow passage

Start the engine
Provisioned stores and buttressed heart
Set rudder’s course through narrow passage
Bound for hopeful light beyond

Energy Beam, Sea to Sky Highway, Tantalus Lookout, North of Squamish, British Columbia, Canada

A Momentary Lapse of Fiction

The energy pulse slammed into the car
Which quivered briefly
Before vapourizing with a flash
Brighter than the beam
Which destroyed it

As the momentary daylight faded
The mist which was once my Toyota
Settled into the crater
That had been a parking lot

I hoped the owner
Of that formidable weapon
Hadn’t acquired my new position

The concrete barrier I’d sheltered behind
Suddenly seemed feeble protection

Night returned and I got the fuck outta there

Chink in the gloom once unbroken, Panamint Valley, Death Valley National Park, California, United States of America

Compass Rose

Through chink in once unbroken gloom
Evanescent hopeful gleam
Turn of night
Will soon enough extinguish

Glow yet held clear and bright
Deep within a tempered heart
A compass knows the way to north
Light, the steel by which love reckons

Ever should the dark engulf
I shall find my way
Illumined by the rose within
No shadow may diminish

Night gives way to morning
Clouds soon enough are lifted
To the souls of seeking hearts
Horizon always beckons
