Light ~ Pic and a Word Challenge #389

Light in the Darkness, Crease Building, Riverview Hospital, Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada

The light within
Too dim
To illumine
My confines

A window
Lets in
The light
Of the world

Slight
Narrow
Itself confined
To a shaft

Enough to illumine

Patterns

Which become bricks
In one wall of my

Confinement

That there is a wall
Unnerves me
But a prison of bricks
Is preferable to one of darkness

So I welcome the light
Invite its wisdom
Its insight

Ask it

Is there more here than the bricks?

A soft, warm chuckle precedes its reply

There is
You will not like much of it
Many things in the light
Seem terrifying

That is the way of life
But so too is there beauty
And love
In the light

And while terror
Is found easily enough
In the darkness
Love and beauty need light

I nodded
Contemplated for a moment
Then turned to the light

I accept this challenge

And so began
The journey to discover
Me

Light from Within and Without

Pic and a Word Challenge

Last week we occupied what was Vacant.

This week, let’s invite the Light in. Or find something else to inspire you in this photograph of light illuminating a brick wall in the dungeons of Crease Building at the film location of Riverview Hospital in Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada.

I apologize for being a day late. Combination of a long weekend, the computer’s in the shop, and I had to wait for Amazon to deliver the keyboard for my tablet… from which this is posted.

The Pic and a Word Challenge is a weekly creativity prompt offered Mondays.

With each challenge I provide a photograph of mine along with a single word. The challenge? Use the pic and/or word as inspiration to create something — a photograph, a painting, podcast, video, prose, poetry, fiction, non-fiction, longread or just a few words. You are welcome to use these two elements (photograph and word) literally, thematically or metaphorically. If you create both images and words, all the better.

To participate:

  • Use any title you like
  • Your response can be words and/or images
  • You may use my image to illustrate your post, or any images you have created
  • Mention that you are responding to the Pic and a Word Challenge
  • Add a link to this post in your response

To help us find your response — whether on WordPress, Instagram, Flicker, Tumblr, etc. — you can also:

  • Add a comment on this post to announce your response
  • Apply the tag/hashtag “Pic and a Word Challenge” or “#picandawordchallenge” to your post

Each week, I’ll list the previous week’s responses at the end of the new challenge. I may also share some on my social media: Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Tumblr, etc.

The previous challenge was: Vacant

Telegraph Building, Gregory Highway, Queensland, Australia
Challenge #388 ~ Vacant

The word for last week’s Pic and a Word Challenge #388 was Vacant, along with this photograph of an abandoned stone telegraph building somewhere alongside Queensland’s Gregory Highway, in Australia.

Four bloggers filled the Vacant this week. Thanks everyone! 🙂
