And cornered
No way out
But to acknowledge
These four walls
Do not a prison make
Nor is the light
Ever extinguished
Beyond the windows
The sun is bright
Inside this cell
My spirit is free
These four walls
Do not a prison make
Nor is the light
Ever extinguished
Beyond the windows
The sun is bright
Inside this cell
My spirit is free
After so many bricks
And so much mortar
I am beginning to understand
Which is the stronger gesture
Which offers the greatest protection
Today
This wall is both beautiful
And a reminder of that time
There is a place
I want to be
Or fled in fear
I’m not sure which
Until I breach
And clamber through
Then come to know
Beyond the fence
As comfortable as I am
With the window
And its pretty scene
Offering distraction
As respite
It occurs to me
Pass through the window
I close my eyes
And dream of sky
Pretend there’s green
Hear the song
Feel the breeze
And the sun’s blue rays
Something
Tantalizingly near
Excruciatingly remote
Intangibly real
Exquisitely beautiful
A mote
In the corner of one eye
Visible only
In the periphery
Invisible looking straight on
After a while
All anyone sees of me
Is the walls
After a while
All that is left of me
Is the walls
Walls
Real and perceived
Have two sides
The one I’m on
The one I’m not
It is a rare wall
Which cannot be defeated
Which allows no means
To the other side
