From a distant fire
Down the narrow valley
Not so stealthy as a virus
But with a smothering effect
Which would someday seem
Not so unfamiliar
A dis-ease
From which none are immune
And all are infected
Not so stealthy as a virus
But with a smothering effect
Which would someday seem
Not so unfamiliar
A dis-ease
From which none are immune
And all are infected
Rosy sky
Pastel remnants
Of celestial fire
River echoes
Light and land and life
Fuels reflective fire
Now what is near
Seems quite clear
But far from here
Is more obscure
Detail lost
Colour sallowed
Though sun breaks through
Its presence mellowed
Yet, still
Grim hope
Bleak finale
Reset: next!
For every thing
The creatures made
Five other things
Were thrown away
For every turn
Of every cog
The fuel they burned
Created smog
‘Til over time
Before too long
In fact, before
The fuel was gone
Their world could not
Sustain their waste
The climate changed
With break neck pace
So am I reminded
A threat may seem remote
Or weak in its intention
But a threat it is
Toxic in its notion
I do well to heed an atmosphere in tension
I visit with them
Let the shadows
Fall under my light
Until they become known to me
Appreciate them for their wisdom
Thank them for their insight
Forgive them for their fears and distractions
Illumined, I see their purpose
Though here demurred
Occluding smoke
Smothers valley’s depth and scale
Still, upon a closer look
The trees, a ridge
A jagged line
And then another
Slight serrated edge
The third and fourth both smoother still
So scale restored
I can imagine depth, at least
As this choking smoke occludes my breath
