Rocky ~ Pic and a Word Challenge #292

I arrive at the end
Of a rocky path
Where a beacon indicates
A vast unknown
Beneath a misty guile

But a light of no small promise
Beckons from a distance
My faith tells me
Is surmountable

Perhaps it will be a smooth sail
On a quiet sea
Or a road no less arduous
Than theĀ  sharp-stoned path
Which bloodied my feet
Since many miles ago

No matter
The destination seems bright
And beautiful enough
While I have covered greater distances
With less hope
And no small despair

The Gateway, Lake Louise, Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada

The Gateway

It appeared as a gateway in the sky
A portal to other possibilities
Though, perhaps, few saw it that way
Panic gripped much of the world
Keeping them inside, locked away
Sharing their fear and uplifting messages
Of hope and determination to see it through
Sharing their confusion and conspiracy theories
Simplistic and simple-minded explanations
Of a phenomenon clearly no one understood

The defiant ones
The violent ones
Threw fists in the air
Angry slogans on cardboard
Rallied outside the labs and government offices
Where the people who obviously cared
Desperately tried to calm the population
While they developed theories and protocols
Used every tool of reason and science
In an effort to understand
The gateway’s true nature

Frustrated by
Exhausted by
All the certainties in an uncertain time
The whole grand chaos of truths and lies
I went out of town
Up on a hillside overlooking the valley
Felt the warmth of the sun
As it burned through the gateway
The borders of which undulated
Expanded and contracted
Like a living thing
With rhythms as indiscernible
As the nature of the object itself

I only wished I could fly
Get to the other side
Of whatever had opened the hole in the sky
Be done with all that was unfolding
On this side
The sun seemed like it was reaching
Through the gateway
Beckoning
With a promise of something much better
Than we’d ever known on this side

Or maybe it was just me
Hoping that this time
We’d learn lessons of no small value
And change the world which had existed
Long before the gateway ever appeared

Chink in the gloom once unbroken, Panamint Valley, Death Valley National Park, California, United States of America

Compass Rose

Through chink in once unbroken gloom
Evanescent hopeful gleam
Turn of night
Will soon enough extinguish

Glow yet held clear and bright
Deep within a tempered heart
A compass knows the way to north
Light, the steel by which love reckons

Ever should the dark engulf
I shall find my way
Illumined by the rose within
No shadow may diminish

Night gives way to morning
Clouds soon enough are lifted
To the souls of seeking hearts
Horizon always beckons

Beacons ~ Pic and a Word #198

We stumble over the blackened terrain
The dim beacon of possibility our guide
A brilliant luminescence promised
Just a few steps beyond our vision

These are the affirmations
With which we keep hope alive
And find in ourselves
The tenacity to persevere

This is how we establish
Purpose and meaning
Our reason for being
No matter the undertaking

These beacons
Were not set by fate
Nor any divine intervention
But by our own dreams

A life without dreams
Is a life of darkness
A blackened terrain
Unmarked by beacons

Dreams create hope
Hope creates purpose
Purpose creates meaning
Meaning lights the beacons
