I remind myself
A photograph is neither
A moment nor a place
Taking a photograph is neither
In the moment, nor the place
So I put down the camera
Take one breath
Then another
In the moment, and the place
I remind myself
A photograph is neither
A moment nor a place
Taking a photograph is neither
In the moment, nor the place
So I put down the camera
Take one breath
Then another
In the moment, and the place
Prairie sundown
Raises me up
The peace of a gentle end
Subdues the day’s winds
To scattered breezes
Playing in tall grass
Painted ambient amber
I breathe in
With a rush like the wind
Then out as a breeze
While the brazen sky
Sings the final notes
Of its golden lullaby
Thoughts take root in my mind
Distractions laid upon the clear path
Undermine rhythm and pace
Obscure the way
Stop
Breathe
Let go the thoughts
Let go of thinking
Let go the desire for distraction
Breathe
Let in the clarity of The Way
Breathe
The true path revealed
Breathe
Step
Breathe
Step, step
I cannot think the path into being
I cannot follow what is not already there
A place of rest
Now at rest
Making intimate new friends
To find such peace
In the stillness of presence
Connected to all things
I breathe
Clear my mind
Become a place at rest
I paddle out onto the calm sea
Despite the listless surf
Rather, no
Because of it
I love the thrill of catching a wave
The feel of the board cutting through the water
The acceleration as the curl builds
And, yes
Even the tumult
When the sea punishes me
For my errors
But I love too
The moments between waves
The calm quiet introspection
Gentle swells sway me
An ocean hammock in the breeze
Take a deep breath
And another
Feel my resting heart beat
In a state of peace
Here am I
Rapt in my own presence
In time with the rhythm
Of nature
Some days
I prefer these long deep breaths
Over the exhilaration
Of a racing heart
So I paddle out
Sit with my being for a while
Then paddle back in
At peace with the world
And myself
A lazy Thursday morning
When life is but a stroll in the sand
With the river flowing out
The waves rolling in
Very breath of Earth
As we all take a welcome sigh
In advance of the hodge-podge concerns
The day will all-too-soon offer
May I carry that sigh of the sea
Into the coming hours
Breathe in waves of beauty
Let the day’s worries flow from my earthly body
The only weight I’ll bear
Left behind on the beach
Footprints in the sand
In them the complexity of life
Perfect imperfection
Destabilized and fortified
A confusion of order
A diffusion of resolution
I breathe in
The beauty of opposites
Comprising the oneness
Of being
I hold on tight
This tiny raft
Upon the raucous
Seething froth
Ride the fury
Through the pass
All the while
Seek inward poise
For only then
Will ire abate
The rapid’s run
Is fueled by hate
While narrow walls
Are blinders worn
To keep my mind
In raging state
A deep breath
In place and time
Crossing
From what was
To what will be
From the holding on
Returning
To the letting go
There’s calm there
I fight my way toward it
Seeking the source of such peace
But bucked and buffeted
By the tumult
I make no headway
In the intensifying storm
