Foggy day, Canon Beach, Oregon, United States
Like shipwrecked sailors
Striving for the beach
Bodies too heavy
For the surface
Only the force of will
Keeping them afloat

The will to live
Or the will to not die
Courage or fear
(I’m unsure which)
Drives them to the beach
Lungs filling with salt water
Muscles spent
Energy exhausted

Another stroke
Another kick
Another gulping breath

Then washed up on the shore
Eyes rolled back

April is National Poetry Month and I am participating in the National Poetry Writing Month challenge (NaPoWriMo) — 30 poems in 30 days. Although, I’ve gotten a bit ahead — this is, I think, poem #41. =)

All the poetry I write for National Poetry Writing Month can be found tagged as #NaPoWriMo.
