Transfixed by the tumbling
Flecks of pulverized shell
Riding gentle wavelets
On a wide, shallow beach
Flecks of pulverized shell
Riding gentle wavelets
On a wide, shallow beach
Heavier than water
Lighter than sand
Carried by forces
Greater than they
Then coming to rest
Wherever they may
But only for a very
Very short stay
Transfixed by the patterns
Created seemingly at random
By tens of thousands of flecks
Each alike but all different
Then all in a moment
I watch the grand sweep of history
The paths of billions of humans
Play out in one wave
Because for that moment
I imagined, how would it be
Were I a small shard of shell
Tossed about by the sea
Sea, sand and shell

April is National Poetry Month and I am participating in the National Poetry Writing Month challenge (NaPoWriMo) — 30 poems in 30 days. Though, I’ll no doubt write more than 30. 😉 All the poetry I write this month can be found here.
