Into the bone dry sky

Into the bone dry sky
I cross the valley floor
Under the gaze of giants
The land’s sentinels for time
Long forgotten

Watched, I am caught watching
Returning their gaze
Trying to decipher the subtleties
Of water, wind and heat
Written with such authority
Upon rock laid down
On ocean floors
Now risen like an anti-Atlantis
Upthrust a mile high
From the bottom of the sea
Into the bone-dry sky
