In the twilight
With the day gone by
And darkness hovers on the nigh
Celestial neighbours come out to play
Remind us of our community
In this little corner of the galaxy
And though they seem
So very, very far
Not much closer than the nearest star
When sol’s tucked in for the night
Stars and galaxies dot the skies
I see the infinity these comprise
As the day fails to black
Half the sky is stars
Half is clouds
Which continue to roll in
Soon enough so thick
Even a half moon couldn’t peek through
Were there a moon at all
But I’m grateful for the stars
Too the clouds
Behind which
Twinkling pinpricks in the blackness
Play hide-and-seek
With star gazers like me
In the quiet heat of the night
Lingering
Above the peaks
One little cloud
Gone rogue amid
The overcast
She calls upon
The fading sun
Which does oblige
With warming light
Just before
Advancing night
The road takes me
Toward the golden light
Day fading into
Indigo night
The long desert drive
Doesn’t end
‘Til well after dark
So I stop before the dusk
Share with the Earth
Daylight’s final sigh
We traverse the night
Guided by our inner light
Undistracted by the dark
Nor the turmoil of the flock in flight
Moonglow breaks the darkness
While the stars take flight
In the cool blue of winter chill
But for the warmth of amber hearths
As the momentary daylight faded
The mist which was once my Toyota
Settled into the crater
That had been a parking lot
I hoped the owner
Of that formidable weapon
Hadn’t acquired my new position
The concrete barrier I’d sheltered behind
Suddenly seemed feeble protection
Night returned and I got the fuck outta there
Oh, little one
Feel my heat
See my radiance
Do you not wish
To be so grand as I?
Oh, indeed, Great One
The little light replied
Your luminous warmth
Is the envy of all
Words in which the Great One
Took no small pleasure
Preening in preparation
To further explain its greatness
But… were I to be you
Continued the lighthouse
When the night comes
Or the fog grows heavy
Who would guide the sailor’s way?
Startled, chagrined and angered
The Great Light drew a deep breath
Preparing a dismissive retort
Then sank below the horizon
Leaving the little light
At Amphitrite
With its ever present beacon
To shine into the quiet night
