Suspended in Amber
This moment on the road
Through the haze
Distant possibilities
Seem promising
But the road veers away
Perhaps to destinations unknown
So I bathe in the amber
And in the moment’s reflection decide
Whether there
Or elsewhere
Reside possibilities unknown
The road takes me
Where it will
Embers burn beneath the grey
From the fire an amber glow
Mitten outlined on horizon black
In the dying light of setting sun
A simple scene becomes exquisite
This amber glow
To end the day
In just repose
As glories fade
Now soon the night
Will bring its peace
This wintry light
A shortened lease
Though night be long
December chill
The fire’s song
And downy fill
Warm my soul
‘Til slumber comes
Pay dreamy toll
Returns the sun
I scramble up an ebony mound
To find a landscape of ebony mounds
Growing to distant mountains
All of the same ebony skin
“At least,” I think, out loud
Into the air so dry
It swallows up the words
Right off my tongue
“the falling sun seems less
Like a fire
On a cast-iron skillet.”
Which carries me
Throughout the day
Until the amber
Comes again
