Serendipity in Unfamiliar Lands

Sunrise, Neil's Harbour, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada

Song of the sea
Caresses the shore
Soothes my soul
Sends me off to slumbers

Sun teases horizon
Gulls cry the morning’s alarm
Warm pastels ignite the clouds
Below wan blue skies

And I
Wakened from deep repose
Welcome another day
Of adventure in unfamiliar lands

Catching the sunset from White Point (photos coming) had been yesterday’s primary objective. Along the way to that, and via a circuitous and unrelentingly beautiful route through the Island’s north cape (photos coming), I’d intended to find some perfect spot to setup the trailer and head to White Point from there. Unfortunately, numerous overnighting spots didn’t quite pan out, so I just towed it out to White Point Harbour, parked it and the RAV4 there, then hiked out to the point.

Post-sunset, now with the full of night descended,  iOverlander offered no options for wild camping and the National Park campgrounds were by now all closed. Hmmmm…

I took the loop through Neil’s Harbour where, along the side of the road was parked a campervan in a large gravel pull-out. Good enough for me. So I pulled in, parked, and explored the shore a bit. The owners of the campervan, joined me outside to enjoy the setting and each other. Even in the dark, I knew we’d all be enjoying an exquisite sunrise… weather permitting.

Well, the weather permitted, and this scene shortly followed upon my awakening.

Travel can be a series of misadventures, and there have been plenty on this journey. But it also provides ample opportunities for serendipity leading to moments of glimmering beauty and delightful, meaningful experiences. Moments to be vigilant for, and grasped whenever found.

I’d have driven right by this place had a campervan not been parked there. I’m grateful for their having spotted it. I’m grateful to myself for grabbing the opportunity they signaled. In the end, it proved the most convenient and inexpensive of all possible options for a night’s stay after photographing the White Point sunset, better than any of those which hadn’t worked out.
