Moments of Discovery

Clear Skies and Clouds, Canmore, Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada
I’m no hero
Reluctant or foretold
No beacon of goodness

I’m no brave soul
Blazing a path of wisdom
For others to follow

Such youthful fantasy

Fate and destiny
Have selected me
For nothing

I am one
Unimportant man
In the darkness
Seeking the light
Leaving a trail of words

Some days
That feels
Even heroic

I seek
I open up
I question
I write

Sometimes I think it’s important work
Sometimes I believe it matters

But the words mean most
The insights truest
If I set them down
When it doesn’t matter
And it’s not important
To anyone
But me

Just me
In moments
Of discovery

While recovering from shingles at home, I’ve been binge-watching the Marvel universe on Netflix. Jessica Jones, Daredevil, Iron Fist, Luke Cage, now The Defenders.

I’ve long been fascinated by the notion of the reluctant hero, the ordinary Jill or Joe thrust into the confluence of events. The person standing on the banks of fate who desperately wants to step away, let those events just pass them by. But… it’s not in their nature to step away.

A friend and I were talking yesterday about confirmation bias, Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, and how so many people are quite comfortable with their perceptions and beliefs. She, on the other hand, is “always waiting for the other shoe to drop.” Reality for some falls under a considerable barrage of challenges.

“Seekers seek,” I replied.

“Does that ever stop?”

“Can you stop breathing?”

Seekers. People compelled to look under the hood of existence, figure it all out. That is, of course, a journey without a destination, which is another way of saying, ultimately, it is a life which will never quite bring an ultimate satisfaction. I will never figure it all out. There will always be something else to seek. There will always be some new clarity to be discovered.
