Without black or white
Of greys and muted greens
An uncertain horizon
Haze obscuring
I realize
The beauty that is the world
The perfection that it is to live
Even without clarity
Certainty or conviction
A fine mist
Settles over me
I lick it from my lips
Taste a little salt in it
Stand in silence, with the trees
There is nowhere
I would rather be
No hot, sunny beach
With vibrant umbrellas
Shading bikinis and board shorts
No city
On the go-go-go
With its hurry and striving
Its ambition and conflict
Its culture and circumstance
Rather I
Listen to the waves breaking
On the shores far below
Watch the white foam dash against the rock
The gulls keening on the wind
Close my eyes
To let the mysterious darkness in
Open my mind, allowing the white
To balance the black
And so become the world in all its glory of grey
