I think of this canyon
As old
Until I reflect
And recall
As old
Until I reflect
And recall
The sandstone
Began to rise
Some 200 million
Years ago
Leaving the water to carve
An infant, a toddler
The geological child
Of a mother, Earth, 4 billion years old
I stand on the edge of a canyon
Still cutting its teeth
And I am but an instant
A speck, in a speck of time
Contemplate eternity?
I cannot even imagine
The lifetime
Of Earth’s children
And Earth, herself
Is but a teen mom
Born of a universe
Thrice her age
Even the canyon
Cannot imagine
Something
So old as that
