Of light in this world
Not all of them
Illuminate my way
Of the rest, I’ve learned to follow
Not always the brightest
Nor the nearest
Of the rest, I’ve learned to follow
Not always the brightest
Nor the nearest
Like the spreading of lichen
Across the surface
Of bare granite
Some colonies
Stronger than others
Some weaker
They interact
Intermingle
Mutate and conjoin
In the intricate darkness
I find beauty
I find insight
Without a subtle understanding
Of the complexity of darkness
I will never see the light truly
I begin to understand
Why both the light and the dark
Are necessary
And when I
Finally find the light
No matter where
It seems to be
Ride them
Duck them
Vault them
Or I can stand firm
And let the ocean wash over me
Feel its power
Enjoy the surge of energy
As it flows all around me
All there is
Is me
And nature
I remind myself
The valley once
Was plateau
Thrust up high
Then worn away
By time and weather
An anachronism
A paradox
To a Westerner
Like me
