Where I first read
Words unspoken
Words arising
From her mind
Her heart
Her spirit
In those eyes
Was love
And disappointment
Hope
And discouragement
To hold that gaze
I would have to do better
Have to be
Better
Not just for her
But for myself
In those eyes
I read a truth
About me
I didn’t like
In the darkness
An inner light
Dim but ageless
Beyond is daylight
Through a window
Barred
Trapped
Inside
I quell the panic
Mindful
Of the small dim light
Until it grows
Illuminates the darkness
And the latch
To the bars containing me
I am free
Remembering the power
Of even a small dim light
This beauty
This pain
This anguish
This love
This cacophony of being
That is I
That is experience
That is action
Tension of light and dark
Tension of right and wrong
Never grey
Never muted
That mud of fear
That mud of anger
Gripping at my heart
Gripping at my mind
But I will not
Go under
But I will not
Lie down
Or die
In the silence
Of living
Without venture
Ambivalence
Trepidation
Uncertainty
Too much?
Too dark?
Too bleak?
For a bistro?
Until a voice says
“That is me, up there
On your wall.”
As a photographer
I have never been satisfied with
Two dimensions
A single moment in time
Or even reality
I prefer
To create
Rather than
Record
Light is my palette
A digital file my canvas
A computer my brush
And all the world
Is beautiful data
To be transformed into art
Come aboard
Set sail
Horizons calling
To journey beyond
I build castles on the beach
Realizing my dreams
Adventures unfolding
One bucket of sand at a time
While the boats
Tug gently at the lanyards
I’ve tied firmly to the shore
My shadow on the pond
Consumed by the canopy of trees
Ringed by the light blue sky
The reflections smooth and steady
Upon a surface of euclidian perfection
Before my eyes
Where nothing is
Just what it seems
Since what it seems
Is in my mind
