Half the way to space

We climbed
And climbed
All day we climbed

And then we rested
Ate and slept a little
Then rose
Rose up in the dark

And then we climbed
And climbed some more
Torches in our hands
Footfalls stiff
On granite cold

Sometimes, just before the sun crests the sky
I close my eyes
Let the colours flood my mind
And fill my heart

I listen to the earth
And her creatures
Awakening

Some beacons keep me safe
They guide me
Through the narrow channels
They help me avoid
Life’s rocky shoals

Some beacons inspire me
To explore
The untravelled roadways
They help me overcome
Life numbing caution

There is something about a sunset
A mood…
It’s a closing, a wind-down
It’s the deep breath at the end of a task

But a sunrise…
Awakenings, beginnings
Arisen possibilities
A sunrise is anticipation

I rise from slumber
From darkness
Dawn light trickles in

Time enough
My phone says
For the walk

It was a dawn
Eerie and alien
That fell like the dusk
Of a never-ending night

Sometimes I am called quite late
To set
On a Friday
In the afternoon

They serve us eggs on toast
With bacon (Gawd, we love bacon!)
We greet each other
“Good morning!”

Sunlight penetrates the dawn
Fiery, virile, urgent
Skyline silhouette
City slumbering, still

Solitude
Among millions
Sole witness
To creation

In the morning light
The hoodoos rise
Bringing fire
To the canyon

Sometimes it is difficult to know
A sunrise from a sunset
The coming of the light
From the gathering darkness

There is beauty in both
And what will come
Will come
So best to appreciate the moment
