At the ends of the Earth
And wondered
What lay beyond
Not the horizon
Where there is only
More water
And more land
Not the horizon
Where there is only
More water
And more land
How many times
Have I watched
The last rays
Of a day dying
In this precious slice
Of time allotted
I record her beauty
With all my skill
But I stand here, now
Beyond so many
Impassable barriers
All along the way
Layer upon layer
Of silt
Of time
Accumulating
In form
In structure
In colour
In time
Beauty pens her poetry
Deftly in the nature of things
In the sand
I dig in roots
In the sun
I bask in life
In repose
I reflect
On the day that has been
On the day to come
Until
Like the birds
I respect the silence
Let my mind go still
The will to live
Or the will to not die
Courage or fear
(I’m unsure which)
Drives them to the beach
Lungs filling with salt water
Muscles spent
Energy exhausted
