And the first stars
Begin to twinkle
In the darkening sky
I am reminded
Earth is a very small place
And I
I am a very small man
I am reminded
Earth is a very small place
And I
I am a very small man
I cannot see
Into the depths
I cannot see
The other side
Not the horizon
Where there is only
More water
And more land
How many times
Have I watched
The last rays
Of a day dying
In this precious slice
Of time allotted
I record her beauty
With all my skill
Layer upon layer
Of silt
Of time
Accumulating
In form
In structure
In colour
In time
Beauty pens her poetry
Deftly in the nature of things
In the sand
I dig in roots
In the sun
I bask in life
Pretense
Distraction
Aggrandisement
Avarice
I find my presence
In the present
And in that presence
Is love
In repose
I reflect
On the day that has been
On the day to come
Until
Like the birds
I respect the silence
Let my mind go still
