My Muses: Paint
I’ve already responded with Function follows Form, which relates how form itself is my favourite subject. Here I want to draw back to my favourite element with which to explore form — and a variety of other subjects — and that has to be paint. When I bought my first professional camera in nearly 15 years, the first shots were all painted surfaces. Some abstractions. Others records of communication. Still others were essays on the environment in which the surface was painted.
The Wide Ochre Land
MacDonnell Range Station
Nestled in the valley
Watched over by ghost gums
Fortified by mountains
A small outpost
In a large land
A cattle station
In the Red Centre
The red granite marble
Rests in his bed of grasses and rock
In the gum tree’s shadow
A marble that never rolled an inch
Nor was shot from a giant’s thumb
Nor tossed by demonic whim
Sitting here in the sun
Sturdy as the crystalline block
He once was on this very spot
Evening haiku balance
Blends violet and orange
Night falls; stars unveiled
Create moments worth living
live in the moment.
Better:
create moments worth living.
I linger in places of power
In places of power
Quell my ego
Quell my mind
They both fear
Whatever is greater than they
Love stays still
The trickle of water
Becomes a torrent
Becomes a stream
Becomes a river
All the while eating the rock
Over which it travels
Cleaving a rivulet
A channel
A chasm
A canyon
