In a darkened corner of my being
I discovered a cool, calm place
Protected from the heat of existence

That raging inferno
Of events
And despair

Perhaps the cool, calm place
Discovered me

They clamber up the mountainside
The lofty trees
With mighty boughs
And riffling leaves

Fir and cedar, conifers
And alder with its lighter leaf
Like steps of cones
All feathery

But my lens
Sees everything
Grand patterns lost
In details keen

Through the straight and true
Over flat, smooth walls
Paint slowly chipped and worried

Until even walls take on

Tied to the prow
Long colourful scarves
Honouring the water spirits
And Mae Yanang
Goddess of journeys
A bid for safe passage
And good fortune

Some see superstition
And irrationality
I see a deeper wisdom:
A belief that the world
Should be made beautiful
To honour the spirit
Of existence
