Hinterland Sunset, Yarumba, Queensland, Australia

Moments of insignificance and immensity

It was in a moment like this one
About 20 years before
The air, it seemed on fire
Engulfing the West End towers
Their glass and steel alight
As if caught in amber
An atmosphere of amber

A moment like this one
When I first awakened
To my connection
To everything

Where I’m Going

Sometimes, the path seems so clear
Not so much that I know where I’m going
But that I’m going where I know

No fixed destination
No long-term goal
No yellow brick road

Small from a high vantage

Sometimes, seeing the world
From a position of power
Only makes me feel
Smaller

Foggy day, Canon Beach, Oregon, United States

Shipwrecked

Like shipwrecked sailors
Striving for the beach
Bodies too heavy
For the surface
Only the force of will
Keeping them afloat

The will to live
Or the will to not die
Courage or fear
(I’m unsure which)
Drives them to the beach
Lungs filling with salt water
Muscles spent
Energy exhausted

Hugging the Coast

I love the roadways
Which hug the coastline
Where the breakers fall upon the rocks
So the sea-spray mists my windshield

I dance along the roly poly
Climb and dive and swerve and wiggle
Ocean by my side
Land rising and falling beneath my tires

Promise to a Friend

In the late afternoon
The sun breaks through
Leaving a glimmering kiss
On Howe Sound’s rippling waters

I am reminded
Of the day’s catches and false-starts
The day which would have never left my bed
But for a promise to a friend

Lines in the Sand

Nature draws lines in the sand
With exquisite finesse

Captured by their beauty
Mindful of their warning

Somber ~ Pic and a Word Challenge #34

A somber shore
Caught in an endless grey sky
Descended down to the sea
Held there by whisperless calm

I hear the roil of white noise
Waves crashing through the broken rock
Source obscured and muffled by darkened boughs
Clinging thickly to rising land

Without Black or White

On a day
Without black or white
Of greys and muted greens
An uncertain horizon
Haze obscuring

I realize
The beauty that is the world
The perfection that it is to live
Even without clarity
Certainty or conviction
