Of the blue I fall into
There is light above
And a vibrancy of life
I can climb to
Some with regret
And, some, disdain
Though most with neither
This nor that
I think not
Of the world I’m in
The present
Not this very day
But all the worlds
I’ve yet to see
Which will also
Fall behind
Then I turn forward
Take the next step
With a clearer vision
Of the trials and adventures
The path ahead promises
I close my eyes
Breathe, consciously
And bring up an image
Of tranquility
A memory
A fantasy
A painting
A scene
Hold that in my mind
Breathing in
Breathing out
We learn to speak
In ways elegant
And ignorant
We grow old
Or we don’t
But all of us
We die
While I imagine pyramids
And Pharaohs
Slaves and Gods
In a dreamtime
Of human greatness
And cruelty
I love more what will change
The injustices which endured
Through the long history
Of intransigent ignorance
And self-interest
But have no place
In a conscious society
There are rare moments of connection
When I can “see” all that is
Know that I am some infinitesimal
Physical
Small part of it all
I stop for a moment
Lean up against the fender
In the dry, brittle air
While the engine tinks and cracks
I never tire
Of the small wonders this world offers
Freedom
Ain’t never gotten with a dollar
Or no lawful decree
Not like a box car
Give to me
