I began to understand
How much, in that moment
Home was where I wanted to be
Not for its familiarity
Nor for its comforts
Nor even its dull grey beauty
But for its being
An integral part
Of my being

Not for its familiarity
Nor for its comforts
Nor even its dull grey beauty
But for its being
An integral part
Of my being
In your presence
I deliver myself
To your mysteries
Dominated by nature
Which is, of course
Its greatest appeal
In torrents
Of mud
And rock
And trees
Wiping away bridges
Wiping away people
The road broke down
So access broke down
A land made
Of strife
And loss
And longing
Chipped rugged
With malice
And petulance
The sky
Whispered menace
And even a calm sea
Cut rough on the keel
Like sun-baked leather
Backlit golden strands
Like the halo
Of an angel
Bent on justice
Or so I think
Reminded by
The tides of seas
The tides of light
As moon circles I
As I circle sun
Not choice
Nor fate
All that is
Circles round
In ebb and flood
But moments such as this
Fuel my imagination
And stoke my passion
For contemplation
A car parks beside mine
Released from its confines
A small boy, about five
Runs over to stand beside me
For a moment surveying our domain
While light breezes
Shimmer on the sea
Settling snow to Earth
From branch and bough
Where it once rested
