The road goes ever on beyond
The pow’r of eyes to see
It carries on
Through lands unmarked
To where I cannot be
Though straight it drives
‘Cross many miles
It never does arrive
It carries on
Through lands unmarked
To where I cannot be
Though straight it drives
‘Cross many miles
It never does arrive
I love also this frozen range
Its crystalline air
With a cutting wind
Driving the storm my way
Stealing my breath
A vulnerable solitude
Presence
Aware, active vigilance
If only I had the eyes
Of old father time
I could see the rock raging
Dropping aeons of boulders
Upon the valley floor
Like hailstones
From sandstone clouds
Eyes forward
Movin’ on
Leavin’ all the dust
Behind me
I close my eyes
Breathe, consciously
And bring up an image
Of tranquility
A memory
A fantasy
A painting
A scene
Hold that in my mind
Breathing in
Breathing out
While I imagine pyramids
And Pharaohs
Slaves and Gods
In a dreamtime
Of human greatness
And cruelty
I love more what will change
The injustices which endured
Through the long history
Of intransigent ignorance
And self-interest
But have no place
In a conscious society
There are rare moments of connection
When I can “see” all that is
Know that I am some infinitesimal
Physical
Small part of it all
