A life spanning a single desert rain
Beside a rock worn smooth
By the long dead river
Which cut a chasm wall
Aeons ago
From there
Three hundred
And sixty degrees
Of Canyonlands
Red tide of fire
Flash floods every morning
With the sun’s first rays
“Don’t worry”
Said the stubby, tenacious conifer
“I’ve got your six”
His platoon murmuring support
