On lotus pads
Which float in place
On dappled gleam
A single flower
Still held in bud
Though petals fall
Onto the pond
They tarry there
Before they sink
And come to rest
To where they’ll feed
Next season’s bloom
A single flower
Still held in bud
Though petals fall
Onto the pond
They tarry there
Before they sink
And come to rest
To where they’ll feed
Next season’s bloom
When it fails to surprise
I discover, soon enough
I have not been looking
Deeply enough, long enough
Saw blades
Of rock
And ice
Lifted into sky
They power dreams
Of boyhood flight
To other worlds
Beyond the stars
I walk away
And let it burn
It follows me
Burns up the world
But if I stay
And let it burn
It burns away
The fuel it’s fed
But every time
I find a wall
Which limits me
And makes me small
I push it back
A little way
Become a bigger
Man that day
Who I am
What I was always
Meant to be
Seeing the land in this way
I recognize the depth
Of my own trauma
Like the waves
Slowly undermining
A steep rocky shore
