Once was
Vibrant
Living
Loving
Became
Decay
Barren
Listless
Now is
Renew
Reborn
Struggle
To be
Vibrant
Living
Loving
Once was
Vibrant
Living
Loving
Became
Decay
Barren
Listless
Now is
Renew
Reborn
Struggle
To be
Vibrant
Living
Loving
I wake in the mornings
Mind always in a foggy mist
To find, always
Like a whisper in the silence
Rising to become song
You are there
Nothing so rouses
My faded spirit
As your voice of grace
And compassion
Singing love to this soul
That’s lived in silence
When I lost her
Some small but integral
Part of my being
Broke away
For a while
It floated nearby
Just out of reach
Yet a lingering presence
The current of time
The drift of the everyday
That Island of her
Receded further and further
Until one day
I scanned the horizon
No Island was there
A single tear fell into the sea
The sea was unperturbed
It said to me
You have learned to live without her
That is all
I understood
I had forgiven her
And myself
For our breakup
I’d allowed the blame
To drift away
Which made me
Whole again
The land moves
Waves of soil and asphalt
Break at my feet
Transport me
To a distant beach
And the love I shared there
I imagine the wind
Carries wafts of brine and low-tide
Amid the many scents of you
Across this rolling sea
And a beckoning highway
I reach out for a hand
That cannot be here
Through the gloom
You reach out
To offer light
And energy
They call this “golden hour”
But every hour spent with you
Is golden
This serpentine life
I dip into
And out of
Joy
Into and out of
Despair
Into and out of
Love
Into and out of
Grief
Knowing there will always be
Joy and despair
Love and grief
Accepting that each will come
As it will
And too shall pass
As it will
Learning to flow through each
With gratitude
And compassion
As I move through life
All the while
Exploring the landscape
Of possibility
You, dear one
On your own stormy passage
Astride God’s wing
These waning days
Rising through your fall
Into His grace
Slowed in wit and voice
Ever keener of spirit
You ascend
Passing through
Deep featureless slumbers
Parting clouds offer
Fleeting glimpses of the love
Gathered ’round you
Then
With swift finality
Through the cloud
Into heaven’s azure
There to witness
God’s full blaze
And in His embrace
The lesser stars
Of those who’d passed
This way before
And there too
The One True Love
You’d lost so long ago
Now with God
He welcomes your return
To Love’s eternity
In the midst
Of expansive glory
She finds wonder
In the smallest
Little things
It is that smallest
Little thing
About her
I love
Most
Tides and surf
Wash death’s remnants
Upon the shore
Autumn’s chill short days
Fell colourful leaves
To brown on forest floor
Nature makes no time
For funerals or grieving
In the cycle of life
Love and loss and mourning
Experiences of consciousness
Which is to say
When existence
Becomes conscious of itself
And learns to fear oblivion
