Carpenter Lake

Cold clear air
A crystalline atmosphere
Seeming so fragile
It might shatter with the slightest blow

Low fog formed over the riverbed
Where icy water
Still warmer than air
Vapourised and froze
To drift over the lake’s recessed floor

I drive
Windows down
Aircon off
As much to feel the heat
As to conserve fuel

The heat
Which makes my skin
Crackle
Like the way the gravel and sand
Grate against the soles
Of my boots

An ode to Winter

I left the cabin at about 8AM, walked out to my car, bound for Whistler Mountain. It had snowed overnight. Not very much. No need to dig out the car. Just clear the windows, and I would be off. But, as I approached it I noticed the sign. How could I resist?
