Grizzled and hard

A land made
Of strife
And loss
And longing

Chipped rugged
With malice
And petulance

The sky
Whispered menace
And even a calm sea
Cut rough on the keel
Like sun-baked leather

He clung to the old ways
Like a dead leaf
To a broken stem
On a barren tree
In the dead of winter

In oblivion

Reminded by
The tides of seas
The tides of light
As moon circles I

Not choice
Nor fate
All that is
Circles round

It is difficult enough
To imagine the infinity
Of space and time
Without trying
To comprehend the immensity
Of my own existence
In just this finite moment

But moments such as this
Fuel my imagination
And stoke my passion
For contemplation

I clamber up

Like a god
Lord of all below me

Released from its confines
A small boy, about five
Runs over to stand beside me
For a moment surveying our domain

I walk the tenuous path
Connecting here and now to other
Mindful of the tides
And time
Knowing
Not all explorations bear fruit
So I plan my return
With equal care

Moving forward, sometimes
Requires stepping backward
To reconnoitre
To reconsider
To recenter on the here and now
So the paths to possible others
May emerge

A Sheen Below, Howe Sound, Sea to Sky Highway, From Horseshoe Bay, British Columbia, Canada

I Find My Way

The sheen below reflects
The snowcapped peaks far above
Unseen beyond low hanging cloud
While the little tug
She trundles cross the sound
Inbound from points unknown

In this world am I unbound
Softer than the lazy breeze
Which barely ripples cross the sea
Unattached to weighty thoughts
Adrift, perhaps, some might say
Yet guided by the tidal flows
