Beauty in soft light
Nature’s array of sandstone
Photographer’s eye
Two eyes in the night
One winking
Over stone
Subtle miracles each
The way of physics
Matter
Quanta, atoms and molecules
Gravity
Gravitas
Billions of years
The stone
Another, subtler, miracle
The way of atmosphere
Geology
The elements
Erosion
A gentle whittling away
Over millennia
Millions of years
Of crystalline rock
And here stand I
A miracle of my own
No greater or lesser
For matter becoming
Life
And life becoming
Conscious
Billions of years
On this planet
I have become
A way for all miracles
To know themselves
In times of trouble
Or anxiety
I reach for Earth
From which I came
And which sustains me
Where resides peace
Only the stone
And perhaps some words
Which may yet outlive the stone
From electrons dancing on copper
Then pen to paper
And now perhaps
To electrons dancing on silicon
A record for eternity
Every now and again
Quite often, to be honest
It’s important to just stop
Interrupt the flow
Of negativity
And touch Earth
Literally and figuratively
Grounding
Being grounded
Is of itself no map for the lost
But if my feet aren’t on the ground
Then no map can guide me
Nor can I find my way
towers and citadels
ramparts and parapets
fortress on the hillside
set afire in the morning sun
battles fought
war rages on
death visits here
still more to come
one strong heart
with will of stone
resolve of iron
but moments late
her final breath
his broken cry
their eyes now glazed
with death and grief
reign of tears
a rain of years
for one still form
her light now passing
towers and citadels
ramparts and parapets
fortress on the hillside
with darkness do the losses come
time withers
all good hope
but for love’s
illuminance
five hundred years
lives pass along
’til one strong heart
revived by dreams
a love once lost
was born anew
he holds the hand
of one once dead
knows the heart
which then fell still
now beats again
in true love’s breast
time’s never still
nor linear
where once was love
love’s never lost
towers and citadels
ramparts and parapets
fortress on the hillside
rememb’ring love can’t be undone
rain falls
pittering the leaves
pattering the earth
nature’s sutra
gently chanted
outside my window
inside
warm
and calm
quiet mind
full heart
present in the moment
Perhaps, so can I
