Am I within
This grand design
Of laws and matter
Such that I
Go travelling
A great expanse
Or one so seeming
In truth
A journey of
A thousand miles
Is hardly more than one
In a universe
Far wider still
Than light
Has ever gone
Such that I
Go travelling
A great expanse
Or one so seeming
In truth
A journey of
A thousand miles
Is hardly more than one
In a universe
Far wider still
Than light
Has ever gone
Awakened human spirit
A grace divine replies
The night is done
New day is come
I breathe in deep
Exhale a grateful sigh
When the All
Which is everything
Becomes the One
Which is nothingness
I seek the moments
When paradox
Becomes awareness
Then am I filled
With the insight of mystery
The light of darkness
Then being becomes non-being
All the many ways we use them
All the many ways they come to me
All the many ways they coalesce
Promoting insight
Undermining ignorance
Evoking feeling
Forming meaning
Hero
A word of nuance
Of many meanings
Of differences
Subtle and grave
Rain quells nature’s sounds
No songbirds sing
No children shout
Ours are the only ears
To hear
The gentle white-noise patter
Of rainfall
Coming back to Earth
A small man
Of no small mass
A big heart
A wise soul
Both worn
Close to the surface
A time before
The Clean Air Act of 1970
The Environmental Protection Agency
Which gave the Act bite
And enforced its many regulations
I am reminded of that time
When I travel to countries
Which ignore the science
Or have no political will
To preserve the Earth
Which sustains us
