In a landscape of stone
I strive for the softness
Of water
Is it paradox
To find this cascade of water
As fascinating
As a campfire’s billowing flame
Elements in contrast
Matter and energy
Opposites
Yet akin
Falling or rising
Beauty
In the flow
Of nature
In the valley
An empty basin
But for lingering salt
Where once a lake
In the sky
A saltless sea
Atmospheric bounty
Held aloft by the winds
All such admirable
Qualities of stone
Though I prefer
Soft
Supple
Flowing
Fluid
O’er gentle time
In nature’s flow
The lightest rain
Must downward go
Drought leaves the gully quiet
What water there is
Seeps down a shaded wall
Trickles in the valley
Tenacious flora on the floor
Perpetual winds in the sky
Until rare torrents fall
Tumbling down the mountainsides
Muddy brown and rocky
Water comes from Earth
Builds the land
Deposits micro canyons
Amber and rouge
Blue and black
Skyline betwixt
The sky and sea
