The sky
Wanes to night
While I
Rest on cliff’s edge
Above the serenity
Of calm waters
Allow the last vestiges
Of daylight
To dance
Their vibrant death
When I
Turn for home
And the solitude
Of a lonely highway
No taillights
But my own
No headlights
But the moon
In the rearview
All the way
To bed
Where I
Sleep the deepest
Of sleeps
Languid moments follow
Sun’s final thoughts
Bounds the sky
From golden to indigo
Wherein abides such grace
There I, manifest, serenity
I watch the hummingbird
Sipping nectar
Its wings but a blur
My eye cannot find
I watch the river
Cascades over rock
Imagine a smoothed blur
For an eye much slower than mine
The hummingbird sighs
Slows its speech to my pace
Time, you see
Whether stopped or a blur
Is a trick of the mind
The tumble and tumult
The cascade and chaos
All of it is pain
My being rent
By forces
External of choice
Until I realize
The flow of possibilities
Converge on a single channel
Even small choices
Alter my course
Through the rapids
I can navigate
Even the roughest water
Toward the serenity
Of a gentle flow
There is some beauty in this
The discovery of peace in turmoil
I find serenity in nature
I discover myself in nature’s serenity
Whether paddling across a mountain lake
Ripples and clouds moved by the lightest breeze
A day like a peaceful sigh
Or standing atop an oceanside cliff
Face into the fierce onshore wind
Waves crashing against the rocks below
Rain and spray soaking my clothes
That’s the thing about nature
It has no agenda but to be
To be is a state of impermanence
Whether storm or calm
No matter
These are nought but conscious evaluations
Accompanied by prejudicial metaphors
Nature knows them
As it knows itself
Impermanence
Change
Nature does not accept change
Nature is change
As nature changes
It knows neither content
Nor discontent
I soak myself in nature
To learn its wisdom
Though journeys be fraught
With pitfalls and wanderings
Know the beauty of the path
That the pitfalls and wanderings
Make the path beautiful
That serenity finds its moments
On a cool, calm morning
Overcast, serene
The river and the people
Flow out to the shore
There to be lost
In their own way
To the surf and the sea
Low ceiling
Limited visibility
Confined space
Yet beautiful
Serene
Alluring
Long lonely highway
Stippled asphalt
Humming rubber
Eating up the miles
Alone in thought
Serene solitude
Long lovely highway
Accept the beauty
In what is revealed
Keep faith in the obscured
