The thing about travel is
Something so everyday
As a group of friends
Hanging out on a street corner
Seems extraordinary…

…even beautiful

The thing about extended travel is
Once familiarity renders
The extraordinary as everyday
The sense of beauty in the mundane
Remains…

…and travels home with me

When I added this to my FB newsfeed I jotted down a few thoughts about the image and poem. This offers a bit of insight into the creation of both:

This morning, I discovered among my archive of unprocessed photos this fortunate capture from the lively markets of Chandni Chowk in the old quarter of New Delhi, India. It has a bit of a Norman Rockwell feel, which I suppose inflected the poem I wrote while editing it; I’m not sure any other artist was so gifted at making magic from the everyday life of Americans.
