Dreaming the Land into Being

Upturned Sea Bed, Maligne Canyon, Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada
As time became time
In Ancestor’s dreaming
The void became sound
The sound became song
The Ancestors sang
The world into being

I wonder which god
With violent rhythm
And upending verse
Turned this sea bed on edge

I wonder this too
Was this Ancestor’s dreaming
The song which was sung
To dream Uluru

A reference to the Aboriginal Dreamtime creation myth, and Uluru, which the European settlers of Australia would later call Ayer’s Rock.
