A few days ago I got my new camera, the Fujifilm X-T2, with the 18-55mm kit lens. Yesterday, I picked up a companion zoom, the 55-200mm. Drove a few kilometers toward the sea and found a good spot to explore the world with these two lenses.

  Thank you! Typical for a cloudy seacoast sunset, the sky was changing rather quickly.
  
  Still…. for most, a bit nature… for a couple, a bit photoshop nurture. =)

      Uh oh… i feel a verbose reflection coming on… 😉
      
      Yeah. I do not miss the darkroom at all. It would have been so very impossible to coax many of the photographs I post to this blog out of film onto a piece of photographic paper in a traditional darkroom setting.
      
      Digital has changed photography, particularly after the advent of professional quality light sensors for cameras. Photojournalists once considered the image collected by the camera on film sacrosanct. The latitude of darkroom technique was ethically limited to refinements of exposure: dodge, burn, colour correction in the enlarger and contrast and tonal control with printing paper. The limited photosensitivity due to the chemical nature of the materials and processes of photography made the initial exposure critical, so it is no surprise that people generally came to consider the latent image on film “pure”.
      
      The latitude of current digital photo sensors combined with the power of digital image processing tools has forced journalistic ethics to reconsider. Cameras are able to collect much more information than can be reproduced on paper, or by the limitIng capacities of video monitors and web browser colour spaces. The “pure” image is the one which can be coaxed from the data collected by the camera and displayed.
      
      A lot of the exposures I collect with my camera nowadays are … ‘speculative’ explorations. I am often thinking, “I might be able to pull something interesting out of this in photoshop.”
      
      Were I a photojournalist, enhancing the broodiness of a cloudy sky would not be ethically true to the moment I captured with a click of a shutter. As an artist, my purpose and responsibility is different: with every image I try to render a vision which provokes or evokes emotional and intellectual responses from the viewer. Sometimes that means being true to the moment. Sometimes that means being true to a vision.
      
      The image I collect on camera forms just the palette of possibility. My laptop is my canvas. Photoshop is my paintbrush.

        Wow! I am totally inspired. I sincerely hope that one day I get the chance to really learn how to use photoshop in an artistic way. For now my time pulls me in a billion other directions so I will have to be content with the original image my camera gives me. But now you’ve got me thinking about the possibilities. …. fun!

      Just to illustrate the power of Photoshop… this is the original image file from my Fujifilm X-T2 shot last Thursday. (click for a larger image) Nothing special, really, but I was interested in the roots by the creekside and thought there might be something interesting in there. A bit of a lazy toss at data collection, actually.
      
      After a fair bit of photoshopping, it became the inspiration for Roots. There is no way a darkroom session could have pulled that image from a film negative or slide with the qualities inherent in that original.
      
      Technically, I could have much more closely controlled the original exposure for film, and then achieved in the darkroom something similar to the photoshopped result. But… no, it would not have been as good. Not nearly as precisely what I wanted, what I envisioned.
