A land to be traversed

Between Liuyuan and Hami, Xinjiang Autonomous Region, The People's Republic of China
Steel, stone and sand
A land where no one
And no thing
Lingers long
A land to be
Traversed

But I…
I pedal, slowly
Breathing the heat
Turning the crank
A lingering movement
Taking in the desert
Loving every mile

Between Liuyuan and Hami
Gansu Province, The People’s Republic of China

Taken during travels, 1998

In 1998 I bicycled the width of China, from Shanghai to Kashgar, near the border of Pakistan. About 6,000 kilometers, about a third of that through the deserts of Xinjiang and Gansu.
