In the heat

In the heat

Like a weight
Upon my skull
The sun bears down
As heat drifts up
From dusty ground

I wonder
At the tenacity
Of living things
And marvel at the beauty
Death sometimes brings

Uluru
(Ayer’s Rock)
Northern Territory, Australia

Taken during travels, 1994

We’d abided by the request of the Aboriginal Australian caretakers of the park containing Uluru, the monolithic rock at the center of Australia’s Red Centre. Rather than climb the rock, which the land’s original tenants consider sacred, we’d walk its circumference. In the end, that turned out to be wise in addition to respectful. The temperatures that day soared to over 40 degrees Celsius (well in excess of 100 Fahrenheit), and by the time we’d completed our circuit of Uluru, the park had closed the climb down.

Hot as it was on the ground, with spotty bits of shade here and there, I can’t imagine the heat of bare rock, with unobstructed sun bearing down from crystal blue skies.

Hmmmm. Seems like a perfect weather candidate for Jennifer Nichole Wells’ One Word Photo Challenge. This week it’s “Pick Your Own” so, this time, it’s gotta be Heat.
