Mother and Child

Mother and Child

She kept him swaddled up
Against the cold
Against her chest
Where he could easily
Reach her breast

He snuggled in
Rested his chest
Against her heart
Which she loved

She could feel
Her heart beating
Against him

She could feel
His heart beating
Against her

She had asked
Every question
She could think of

Considered
Every aspect
Of bringing
A new life
Into the world

But nothing
Had prepared her
For this emotion
This feeling
This insight

He had left her body
But he remained
Deep
Deep
Inside her

And there
He would always
Remain
