I love your words for this. They allow me to imagine who this woman is. Now I want to know the rest of her story.

    It’s interesting when you’re able to reflect like that. Until recently I would often think of past relationships and the short-comings of the other party in them that helped lead to the demise of said relationship. But now I can see that there was plenty I hadn’t discovered in myself yet either. As you’ve said I’ve left my own wake as well.
    On your comment on the most compelling – sometimes I think the most broken people are the deepest people. They are forced into introspection. Which IMO leads to more creativity, open-mindedness, etc. etc.

      Yes, tragedy and trauma … we bend or we break, though neither outcome defines us. It is how we move through life after these moments which does.
      
      I once asked a friend, a drama therapist, “Are we all broken?” She replied, in essence, “yes, at least a little, but there are healthy broken people, the ones who realize they are broken, and are consciously trying to heal.” There’s a beauty and truth in that thought, and a delightfully vibrant illumination on the nature of us all, no matter how broken.
      
      But I think also, sometimes, it is the complete train wrecks who are the most fascinating. The ones flying headlong and passionately into oblivion, unconscious or uncaring of the damage such a journey encourages on the travellers themselves, and anyone riding shotgun.
      
      I think of Kerouac riding shotgun on Neal Cassady’s train as an exquisite example of just such a ride.

        Very well said. Whenever someone has told they’re weird, not normal, broken etc my repose has always been that we all are. There’s a comfort in that. But yes there’s something extra special/intriguing in the ones who have nothing left to lose. Almost as if we all wish we could live with that same level of abandon.

        Heh…. abandon & recklessness. Immediately after sending that, it occurred to me I’ve posted on exactly that combination just yesterday… and with a more appreciative inflection than in these comments. : )
