The Harsh Mistress

The Harsh Mistress
Sun and rain burrow deep
Into paint and the past
Revealing transitions
And the names of those
Lost to time and memory

They rest
Unlike rust
And the elements
Chewing away
At ephemera

Lifetimes broken
Like glass shattered
By a casual stone
From a young boy’s
Hand

It’s just
That easy
For time

The harsh mistress
